Grissom High School

Project Description: Grissom High School was named for astronaut Virgil Grissom in September of 1969. The school first opened its doors with an enrollment of nearly 1,600 students and quickly surpassed its 2,000-student capacity by the 1980’s. The new Grissom High School was built on a 65-acre campus and stands at 350,000 square feet with a capacity for 1,900 students and room for future expansions. Grissom also brought Project Lead the Way, which has been migrated into every school in the school system, to bring science, technology, engineering and math education to a city that embodies these concentrations at the core of its DNA. Since its original opening in 1969, Grissom has built an esteemed reputation by becoming Huntsville City Schools’ first Blue Ribbon School.
